The Values Foundation of a Human-first AI Initiative

First delivered to the AAC&U Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum in September, this presentation is now being shared with OHIO faculty. Colleges and universities currently recognize the importance of AI initiatives promoting a human focus. But what does it really mean for an initiative to be "human-centered"? 

This session presents themes emerging from a review of 10+ human-centered approaches at higher-ed institutions across the country and highlights the Human-first Initiative at Ohio University. The Human-first Initiative is not a mandate or a technology directive; it is a set of values about who drives innovation and why. Participants leave with an understanding of how their peers across the nation balance the respective roles of humans and the technologies we use, and the 12 values that arise from an institutional scan of AI initiatives at research universities, liberal arts colleges, HBCUs and community colleges.

Participants will be invited into conversation regarding how these values might appear in their engagement with students and in their courses.
