Calissa Jones

During this event, I worked with a few others to begin the construction of a small footbridge, including clearing foliage, placing wooden beams, and wheelbarrowing gravel to the area. There were other groups accomplishing other projects- gathering acorns, winterizing a garden, creating a compost area, and so much more!- that we then got to learn about at the end of the event. It was a beautiful day of working with a great group and learning about local sustainable practices. Truly a wonderful experience!

Throughout this experience, volunteers gardened, picked up litter, and cleaned the general eating area at the UCM. Doing so provided me with a sense of purpose in the work I was doing as I saw members of the community arrive from all walks of life to enjoy the free meal provided by the UCM. Additionally, the messages that the UCM promoted- of equality, inclusion, and growth- resonated with me; the same friendly atmosphere made it a joy to work throughout the day and encouraged me to connect with the other volunteers I met there.
