Arrupe Scholars

Additional Events and Opportunities!

1. Please join the Students for Social Justice (and various supporting programs and departments, including PJHR) for their Border Wall Week. You will notice the two fences in front of the library and Student Center, with informational materials. Great job by SSJ, especially Julie Whitmore and Liz Nies! Kickoff tonight at 5:30 in the Jardine Room. Other related events below (or see attached flyer)

2. Please join the English Department and the Peace, Justice, and Human Rights program tonight on Monday, September 24th at 8pm in Rodman Hall A as we welcome Zach Savich and Hilary Plum, authors of numerous award-winning books of poetry and prose, including Daybook and Strawberry Fields, a novel about the problem of journalism and truth in our present age. They are uniquely talented, writing work that merits reading and rereading. Hilary writes powerfully about the nexus of personal struggle and imperial life, the distant wars that infect our nation's soul. Here they are, featured on NPR: http://www.ideastream.org/news/acclaimed-writing-couple-now-makes-cleveland-home

3. Other Border Wall events:
Wed 8pm, Debate on Immigration, Donahue Auditorium (which I believe is co-sponsored by both College Democrats and Republicans).

Thurs. 5pm in Rodman A: "Blood Rising": A brief film screening and talkback with Irish artist Brian Maguire, dealing with the mystery of the murdered women of Juarez, a border city where hundreds have been killed. Maguire has been painting portraits. This is sponsored by PJHR, with help from the Irish community, LASA, and others. Here's the trailer for the film:

Mock Border Wall Week: Build Solidarity, Not Walls
From September 24-28 Students for Social Justice will be hosting a mock border wall on campus. There will be two sections of fencing: one outside of the student center and one in front of the library. The fence will have information on the humanitarian, economic, and environmental cost of the wall, as well as U.S. immigration policy. Our goal is to inform the campus about issues with our immigration system and to start a conversation about how we can join in solidarity with immigrants. Contact ssj@jcu.edu with any questions.

Soon our Arrupe student marketing & communications team will start posting opportunities for service, internships, events & the such on our give pulse site. Until then, I will post time-sensitive opportunities.

SERVICE: Contact person: Sean Freeman (sfreeman19@jcu.edu)
Organization: Youth For Justice.

During the service, JCU students attend different 8th grade classrooms to educate students on their rights as citizens, what the term "justice" and "injustice" stand for and where they see examples of these in their daily lives.

That information is usually covered within the first semester, and then in the Spring, students are paired with groups of 8th graders who research a social justice topic that is relevant or important to them, create and execute an action plan, and then present what they found and did at a conference at John Carroll. It is an incredibly educational and humbling program to be a part of and I thought some of the Arrupe Scholars might be interested in participating!

The service times are here:
Mondays: 8:40 – 10:25 am
Wednesdays: 9:45 – 11:21 am
Fridays: 9:20 am – 11:00 am & 1:10 – 2:50 pm

Students are more than happy to attend the service for a semester, but are encouraged to spend the entire academic year in the classrooms to create consistency and follow the projects through. Even still, if they can only attend one semester, that is fine. The times for service will remain the same in the Spring. If anyone is interested, please contact Sean Freeman. Service placements will not officially open until later for all students, but if someone would like to participate, we can save them a spot, room permitting.
