About

Position summary and objective:
UpCycle Ohio Thrift Store & Community Makerspace are seeking friendly and enthusiastic folx to volunteer with us!  Our team has grown into a community of  thoughtful, funny people. We share values of inclusivity, which is made evident when visiting the space.

Our volunteers may be asked to adjust their shift location between the thrift store and makerspace, depending on the needs of those spaces. Routine cleaning, organizing, making of community connections, and limited customer interaction are required in both spaces. Both the thrift store and the makerspace are inherently collaborative environments, and we ask our volunteers to give input when we are making decisions. We love folx who can work independently; both solving and identifying problems.

Volunteers will not be asked to handle money (run the register), generate social media content, or operate company vehicles. Though many tasks require a moderate amount of lifting and standing, we are flexible and can modify most tasks for various accessibility needs. Volunteers are offered a 40% discount on any purchase of merchandise in the thrift store or makerspace on days that they serve.

While volunteering at the thrift store, folx will be specifically responsible for sorting donations, pricing donations, cleaning/sanitizing donations as needed, and managing recyclable materials on the property. We are a Zero Waste operation, which means that nothing goes to landfill unless we absolutely cannot find another home for those things. As a result, we recycle many otherwise hard-to-recycle materials like textiles, scrap metal, medical equipment, film plastic, batteries, electronics (even broken ones), books, and nonprint media (VHS, CD, DVD). Processing donations (particularly garments) accounts for the bulk of our volunteers’ time.

When volunteering at the makerspace, folx will be largely responsible for tool library maintenance, servicing equipment (for those who are qualified to do so), and rolling/stocking fabric. We are always looking for folx to teach classes and lead workshops in the makerspace; which is a paid opportunity. Volunteering is a great way to get familiar with the space!

We are nonprofit Social Enterprises of Rural Action, and volunteers receive a complimentary Rural Action Membership. Rural Action is a membership-based nonprofit working in the southeast and central eastern counties of Appalachian Ohio since 1991. Our mission is to promote social, economic, and environmental justice by training, organizing and supporting communities.

Rural Action has a network of over 600 members throughout Appalachian Ohio. The organization is governed by a Board from across southeast Ohio, with strong private sector involvement. The Board oversees a CEO who manages a staff of 30 full time equivalent staff, 5 AmeriCorps VISTAs and 31 AmeriCorps state and national. Rural Action members are involved as volunteers, participants, decision makers, and project designers. Our members guide our sustainable development work in Appalachian Ohio.

Without the help of our volunteers, both UpCycle Ohio Thrift Store and Community Makerspace wouldn’t even approximate the level of work we are able to accomplish now. We are so grateful for the folx that have stuck with us, and we hope that you will join our team!
